Williams - On the way to nowhere

Posted on April 1st, 2007 in Travel by garrettgunn

Okay so probably about time i posted something about Williams. Its a quiet little place not much to do unfortunately. There’s a pub a club house - were we went to see a sheep shearing contest last week, an aussie football field, a medical clinic, police station, fire station, a 24hr internet shop (thats only opened from 10-4), a small shop and thats really it. Oh there’s an outdoor swimming pool (one in every town here) and of course there’s two petrol stations.

We of course work at Caltex petrol station which is opened twenty four hours (the Albany highway goes past Williams - so there’s lots of trucks and passerbys). We’re mainly working the night shift at the minute but there’s so much to do you don’t notice the time going by. It’s mostly truckies who come in at that time - its too dangerous for everyone else to drive once it gets dark cause the thats when the Kangaroos come out they’re actually responsible for quiet a lot of road accidents. Only cars and lorries with RooBars drive at night and the trunkies take great pride in telling how many kangaroos they hit. there is a hill on the freeway not to far from us that is called hamburger hill for obvious reasons

The trucks here are massive the big ones are called road trains which are three carriages long. I was asking some of the truckies what kind of hours they drive and what distances - they were telling me its three days straight driving to Sydney where theres two drivers one sleeps while the other drives only stopping to eat and have a shower (most roadhouses have showers). Once they reach Perth they just turn around and head back to Sydney.

Thats really all there is to say about Williams at the minute hopefully we’ll be able to take a few days off in a few weeks and do some traveling - we’ll have to wait and see.

thats all for now

Paddy’s Day Perth

Posted on April 1st, 2007 in Travel by garrettgunn

So work is going okay but it was great to get the weekend off, worked friday evening and wasn’t back in till Monday night at 10.  Which meant realistically we had three days off - thank god don’t think i would’ve been able to work otherwise. Anyway it was back to Perth for St. Patricks weekend - it only took us 2 and a half hours to get there (theres traffic here too).

We stayed with Adam and Danny again so went straight to the house where i got changed (no aircon in car remember so wisely waited till i got there to get ready) while Garrett and Adam headed off to find a barbers. There was a big fund raising campaign for that weekend a head shave - so the two boys (and a few of Adams friends) decided to get their beards cut as well. Unfortunately for the two lads all the barbers and hairdressers were closed so they couldn’t get theirs done.

It was off to the pub in Scarborough at around three where we met up with Adam and Danny’s friends - a real nice bunch, of course Adam and Garrett got slagging as all the rest of them had got their beards and heads shaved (Adam had a lot of hair he’d been planning on shaving as well). Everyone was decked out in green (except for me - nothing green in the backpack and never got round to buying anything) and there was lots of green white and orange (no gold) spray being used. Unluckily for us all the spray had been used by the time we got there so Garrett and Danny headed of to buy some -big mistake.

When the two returned with the spray (plus food dye - Garrett decided he wanted green pints wouldn’t mind but wouldn’t even drink them at home anyway…) Adam and Garrett disappeared into the toilets. Well we nearly fell off our seats laughing when they came back - another bright idea the two decided to spray their beards green - no kissing that night you really need to see the pics. Of course i put some in my hair and also joined in the green pint drinking - their was green everywhere the food dye was all over us.

After a couple of hours and some fish and chips we headed into Perth city to the irish club to catch the rugby - the place was packed (and not just full of irish the aussies are as bad any excuse!). Have to admit didn’t watch too much of the rugby was too busy talking and drinking! just noticed we beat Italy but didn’t have more points than France - but it was 12 o’clock at night so it wasn’t really my fault.

We headed back to Scarborough around two and fell asleep - all very civilised in bed by half two. The next day i took the day off drinking and chilled out with Danny (she had work on Monday morning) while the two boys headed off to buy a razor and see who was in the pub already - eh them. When they got back Adam shaved the head and the beard - big difference. Garrett decided to keep his beard and just tidyied it up a bit. The lads headed to the beach - it was too hot for me plus i’d a hangover and what they were really planning on doing was heading into the water for a half hour spend 10mins drying off and then heading back to the pub to see who was there….)

On Monday morning we got into the car and headed back to Williams (well after a bit of a push that is the battery might need to be replaced). We got back early to Williams early so had loads of time to get ready for work.

well hope all had a good time over St. Patricks  Day hope you all enjoy the pictures…
